In this unique handbuilding class, participants will create a hollow ceramic animal sculpture using an original construction technique developed by the instructor. Students begin by forming a hollow clay body over a temporary paper core, allowing them to build lightweight yet structurally sound forms without the use of a potter’s wheel.
Once the hollow body is established, students will sculpt their chosen animal by adding and shaping features such as heads, wings, tails, legs, or ears, depending on the animal selected. Emphasis will be placed on proportion, attachment techniques, and expressive form. Each participant will receive individualized guidance from M. J. McFalls to help them successfully realize the animal they envision.
Participants will also apply underglaze color to the greenware sculpture, allowing for personal expression and surface detail before firing. All supplies are included, you need bring nothing but your hands and imagination This is a fun and unique opportunity to make something that will last forever
Finished pieces may be used purely as decorative sculpture, or adapted with openings to function as:
Potpourri holders
Night lights
Sculptural vessels for holding flower stems in a small amount of water
Completed work will be taken to the instructor’s studio for firing and glazing, then returned to the Hershey Area Art Association approximately two weeks later.
This class is appropriate for all skill levels, including beginners, and offers a rewarding opportunity to explore sculptural clay while creating a finished, functional art object.
